Dr. Aqeela
Mahomed
Clinical Psychologist & Neuoropsychologist
Dr. Aqeela Mahomed is a dual-licensed Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). She began her career in 2013 after being selected for the highly competitive Clinical Neuropsychology Master’s program at the University of Cape Town, where her thesis focused on executive functioning rehabilitation following paediatric traumatic brain injury. Her clinical training included placements at Groote Schuur Hospital, Red Cross Children’s Hospital, and UCT’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
At the time, South Africa had no formal registration category for neuropsychology, prompting Dr. Aqeela to pursue a second Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Stellenbosch University. Her second thesis explored caregiver experiences in low-income communities affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. She completed her clinical internship at Rahima Moosa Hospital and Johannesburg-based community clinics, followed by her community service in the same setting. In 2020, she became part of the first cohort to pass the HPCSA’s board examination for Neuropsychology.
Known for her warm, culturally sensitive, and neuro-informed approach, Dr. Aqeela offers holistic psychological care that integrates the brain–mind–body connection. She is passionate about psychoeducation, community mental health, and destigmatizing brain-related conditions. She holds a PhD from Stellenbosch University, is a published academic, and remains deeply committed to lifelong learning and advocacy in mental health.
