About the Event

Awake into Movement is a somatic practice designed to offer both the theory and the ‘how to’ of incorporating nervous system regulation into your personal and professional life. 

Highlighting the importance of the mind-body connection, it aims to deepen embodied awareness for the purpose of attaining a more integrative state of mental health and wellbeing. 

This 1-hour experiential workshop will focus on: 

  • Understanding the nervous system as our primary information receiver. 
  • Exploring what it feels like to approach our experiences from a bottom-up perspective (body first, mind second).

The workshop aims to offer:

  • An opportunity to reconnect to the mind-body relationship through noticing- and naming physical sensation first, rather than thought or emotion.
  • Simple and accessible somatic exercises that can be used to support healthy nervous system regulation for you and your clients.  

About your facilitators: 

Maxine R. Bekker is an HPCSA registered arts therapist (MA Wits), an Expressive Movement Facilitator, and a Family Constellations Practitioner in private practice in Johannesburg. Her clinical work primarily focuses on supporting people that are navigating difficult life-transitions and exploring new expressions- and stories of self through IFS, somatic practice, and psychodynamic theory.

Thandi O’Hagan is an Embodiment coach and an Expressive Movement Facilitator with 8 years’ experience hosting open movement meditation classes. Thandi's primary modality of work is somatic with a particular focus on the nervous system. She has a specific interest in depression management and addiction recovery and aims to support clients to gain greater agency over their lives through compassionate awareness, curiosity and self-regulation. She is a certified Level 3 Kahuna Massage therapist and holds a Nia White Belt. Thandi is currently completing “first- responder” lay-counselling training with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group.
